Rare British Colonial Macassar Ebony Bureau Bookcase

This exceedingly rare, diminutive early 18th-century English colonial bureau bookcase is veneered in richly figured Macassar ebony with striking hexagonal oyster veneers to the doors, fall-front, and drawer fronts. The sides and much of the secondary structure are executed in solid streaky ebony, the surfaces throughout possessing exceptional depth of color and patina.

The upper section has a molded cornice above a pair of arched mirrored doors enclosing adjustable shelves, a fitted interior of pigeonholes and drawers, and a single candle slide. The lower section has a finely fitted stepped interior incorporating further pigeonholes and a sliding well above two short and two long drawers, and is raised on bracket feet.

Furniture of this type and period from the Indian subcontinent is exceptionally rare. During the early 18th century, English influence in India remained comparatively tentative and existed alongside strong Portuguese and Dutch presence. It was only later in the century, as British dominance expanded, that more substantial bodies of Anglo-Indian furniture production emerged.

Particularly remarkable here is the ambitious use of Macassar ebony in both veneer and solid form, combined with the sophisticated architectural form and unusually diminutive scale. Pieces displaying this level of craftsmanship, survival, and originality are encountered only rarely.
